Mississippi Mileage and Vehicle Tax Records (2026): Schedule C Income, Bonus Depreciation Adjustments, TNC Licenses and Driverless Vehicles
General information, not tax or legal advice. Talk to your tax preparer or attorney about your situation.
Mississippi has you report business profit on Form 80-105, line 39, and taxes 2025 income at 4.4% above the first $10,000, with cuts scheduled from 2027. A Department of Revenue notice says federal bonus depreciation isn't allowed. Rideshare companies need a Mississippi Insurance Department license, and fully autonomous vehicle operators must file a law enforcement interaction plan.
Mississippi doesn't start from federal adjusted gross income the way many states do, so it pays to keep the business numbers behind your Schedule C. This guide covers what the Mississippi Department of Revenue and Legislature say as of October 16, 2026.
The federal baseline every Mississippi driver starts from
Most vehicle deductions begin on your federal return. If you're self-employed, you can generally use the standard mileage rate or actual expenses for the business share of your car (IRS Topic 510). For 2026 the business rate is 72.5¢ per mile for January 1 to June 30 (IR-2025-128 / Notice 2026-10) and 76¢ per mile for July 1 to December 31 (IR-2026-29 / Announcement 2026-11) (IRS standard mileage rates). EVs use the same rates; see the 2026 EV mileage rate guide. Most employees can't deduct unreimbursed car expenses federally (Topic 510). IRS Publication 463 asks for each business trip's miles, date, destination and purpose, plus total miles. Commuting stays personal (commuting vs business miles).
How Mississippi treats vehicle deductions
The 2025 Form 80-105 instructions have you enter business profit or loss on line 39 (line 40 on the nonresident return), with a federal Schedule C for each business; if the Mississippi amount differs from federal, you provide a reconciliation or enter the adjustment on Form 80-108, Schedule N. The Schedule C vehicle deduction, figured with the standard mileage rate or actual costs, flows through that line. For 2025, income above the first $10,000 is taxed at 4.4%. The instructions note House Bill 1 (2025), which lowers that rate to 3.75% for 2027, 3.5% for 2028 and 3.25% for 2029, with further cuts after that.
Depreciation: the bonus adjustment
The Department of Revenue's bonus depreciation notice says the federal 30% and 50% bonus depreciation isn't allowed for Mississippi purposes. Taxpayers add back the federal bonus, take extra regular depreciation on the higher Mississippi basis and adjust any gain on sale. The notice predates today's forms, so ask your preparer how it applies to current federal bonus depreciation and keep a Mississippi depreciation schedule. See robotaxi fleet depreciation and Section 179.
Rideshare (TNC) rules in Mississippi
Mississippi's TNC law, House Bill 1381 (approved by the Governor on April 4, 2016 and effective July 1, 2016, per the bill history), requires a TNC to get a license from the Mississippi Insurance Department (see the department's TNC license FAQ). TNCs must send riders an electronic receipt, have a policy against cash payments and keep individual trip records for at least one year. That's shorter than the IRS period, so download your own receipts and annual summaries. See which rideshare miles count.
Robotaxis and fully autonomous vehicles in Mississippi
Under Miss. Code § 63-35-7, before operating a fully autonomous vehicle on public roads without a human driver, a person must submit a law enforcement interaction plan to the Department of Public Safety. Senate Bill 2269 (2026) extends that section's repeal date to July 1, 2029. The bill history shows it was approved by the Governor on March 13, 2026, effective July 1, 2026. For other rules, check with the Mississippi Department of Public Safety or an attorney. For fleet records, see robotaxi fleet tax basics.
What to keep in your Mississippi records
- Each business trip's date, start, destination, purpose and miles, plus total miles for the year (Pub 463); a weekly log counts as timely kept.
- Separate Business, Commute and Personal totals for Form 4562 Part V.
- Keep records until the period of limitations runs out, generally 3 years federally (IRS); ask your preparer about the state period.
- Keep a Mississippi depreciation schedule beside the federal one if you took federal bonus depreciation.
- For rideshare: download trip receipts and annual summaries; Mississippi TNCs only have to keep trip records one year.
For the full list of log fields, see what the IRS asks you to record.
Example: 1,000 hypothetical business miles driven in September 2026 × 76¢ (IR-2026-29) = $760 at the federal standard rate. Miles driven in March 2026 would use 72.5¢ (IR-2025-128) instead, so keep each trip's date. Estimates, not tax advice.
One log for both returns
A Mississippi return doesn't call for a second mileage log; your preparer works from the same business, commuting and personal miles. CyberDeduct builds a mileage log around IRS Pub 463 from your Tesla's own trip and odometer data (Model S, 3, X, Y and Cybertruck). You connect your Tesla account once through Tesla's standard account sign-in (OAuth); CyberDeduct never sees or stores your password. Home/work rules and route templates label most trips Business, Commute or Personal; you tap to change any label and confirm the purpose. The dashboard shows your business-use percentage and warns you on the 28th if you're under 50%. You export a PDF or CSV log plus a Form 4562 Part V worksheet for your preparer. See how the log is built or see plans.
